Hi. It's Nadine again, I posted a bit ago about starting a little school.
I want to say that thanks to a lot of help and donations and hard work, we're getting pretty close to having things ready to go. I can't say thank you enough to everyone who's brought things back from zones, helped find space, helped collect donations, helped build the tent, and offered advice and recommendations. We couldn't do this without all of your help.
But there's one thing it would still be really great if we could get. More people who can donate some time to teach. Just an hour or two a week would be a huge help. I have no idea how many students we're actually going to get, it could just be three, but I'd rather have more volunteer teachers than not enough. I know we all have jobs and responsibilities, but please get in touch if you think you'd like to help out.
We plan to teach the basics, but also things that are important to know living in this world. Stuff about vehicles and vehicle maintenance, road safety, first aide, survival skills. And we're open to anyone who wants to learn, it doesn't matter how old you are.
Nobody's ever too old to learn.

None of this would be happening without you, you know.

At least let me buy you a couple slices of pizza or something. To celebrate pulling this off.

Speaking of, we should probably get together and work out the details of who's teaching what once we know how many teachers we have.

I've had a couple people respond putting themselves forward as volunteers, including at least one you pointed my way.

What we're doing. This is a group effort, I just got the ball rolling.

I've never run a school before, but I was an elementary teacher for almost 20 years.

i'm not a teacher but i can show people how to do some stuff. hunting, tracking, shooting, driving. depends on what you need i guess
no subject
But maybe not shooting for the younger kids.

How does that sound?

you found anyone else yet?

I have, actually. I think we have enough volunteers to have an actual little 'staff' of teachers.
I really didn't expect this much response.

Mathematics, physics, vehicle maintenance - any of those.

Once we know how many teachers we have and what subjects we can offer, we can work out a proper schedule.

I'm Jayce, by the way.

It's good to meet you, Jayce. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

I guess I should admit I've never taught a class before, but I've done some tutoring.

Thank you, that would be great. I really appreciate it.

I taught history most recently, but I've done a little bit of everything for middle and high school kids. What do you think we'll need the most?
no subject
That's a really tough question. There's no formal education here at all, nothing structured, so I have no idea what the priority is going to be. Kids are going to have really uneven starting points.
But survival and car stuff are pretty high up there, considering.

[ There's a lot of folks helping around for that as it is! Teaching, though... ]
Maybe we could help make some assessment tools, see where people are at. Teaching reading is going to be strange and difficult if we can't decide on a particular language, but I think maths should be rather universal.
no subject
And that is a really good idea. I can work something up, I haven't been out of the teaching game that long. But I wouldn't mind advice or suggestions, if you have any.
no subject
I don't have much in the way of suggestions right now though. I've never taught in a tent school, so I would probably just follow your lead on that.

But never like this, I was an elementary teacher at a private school. We're all just kind of figuring it out as we go.
no subject
I worked at a pretty private school myself, but for older kids. Their challenges are a little different - I often struggled with their attitudes. But I suppose that between those two ages, we'll cover quite a lot.
no subject
But I was teaching a little bit of a wider age range just before I came here. Really long story, but it was closer to what we're doing now than working at the private school. But not really any teens, though, so your experiences will be really valuable. I can only imagine they have their own set of difficulties.

While I don't have any experience in teaching or a specialized subject to teach, I would be happy to volunteer. I realize there aren't that many younger folks around, but if you'd like some support in teaching foundational things, do let me know! Even if it's just to have a second set of hands to assist.
Sincerely,

[ trust that this probably took her two hours to type out because she is a ye olde who would rather write a physical letter ]

And like I said, it's not just for kids. There are people here from all kinds of different places and circumstances. I've met people who'd never seen a car until coming here. We're open to everybody.
no subject
But that is all the more reason for me to help, especially if I'm learning from others in turn. Might I ask where this school is going to be located?
no subject
We have space in the corner of a parking lot. We're a literal tent school, complete with homemade pavilion tent. I can send you directions.
